1. Sex, GENder, and Online Education begins on Monday!
.......................................................
Date: 14 January - 17 February, 2002
Moderator: Cher Hill

Register now for our first seminar of 2002! Together we will explore the
significance of sex and GENder in online education, focusing on three areas:
access to computer technologies, participation in online environments, and
course content, materials, and curriculum. Participants will have the
opportunity to critically examine the roles of sex and GENder in
face-to-face and online classrooms and collectively establish strategies for
developing more equitable learning environments.

This seminar will be facilitated by Cher Hill, MA Education, Simon Fraser
University. Cher has maintained a research interest in sex and gender issues
in education throughout her work in elementary schools, and as a
university-level online instructor and course designer.

Beginning January 14, access the seminar directly:

2. Upcoming Seminar: Residency in the New Age of Online Learning
.......................................................
Date: 4 - 17 February, 2002
Moderator: Alan Davis

Traditionally, post secondary students are required to complete a minimum
number of credits at their home institution in order to receive a credential
from that university or college. This seminar will engage the post-secondary
education community in a discussion that considers questions related to
these residency requirements, a topic of increasing importance in the new
age of online learning.

    * What are the historical bases of residency?
    * Are these historical bases still valid in the era of online learning?
    * How is residency impacted by online learning, and vice-versa?
    * What barriers and protections do residency requirements offer learners
and institutions?

This seminar will be facilitated by Alan Davis, Chair of the Canadian
Virtual University Advisory Committee, and Vice President, Academic,
Athabasca University.

Canadian Virtual University is a partnership of universities across Canada,
committed to delivering university-level programs that can be completed from
anywhere in the country or beyond.

3. Practical Applications of Data Mining
.......................................................

Characterization, discrimination, prediction, classification, clustering,
association analysis, sequence analysis, time series analysis... How can
these typical data mining tasks assist online educators and students?

GEN members continue to express their sincere thanks to Osmar Zaiane of
University of Alberta for introducing, clarifying, and expanding on these
concepts. Participants have requested that the seminar remain open to
continue to explore the use of data mining techniques in their design and
assessment of e-learning.
