The 60-mile long bay has come into being only in the last 200 years as ice has melted further and further back to reveal inlets, islands, and rocky fjords.  The longest river of ice in North America, the Hubbard Glacier is also one of the most active glaciers of its kind in Alaska.  It has 2,160 square kilometers of blue ice stretching back 120 kilometers.
