Skagway was a stopping point along the way to the Klondike for a great many prospectors in the hunt for gold.  All Stampeders vulnerable to the perils of the wilderness, con men, and the elements started arriving by boat in October 1897.  The town quickly grew to 3000 living in tents and quickly built wooden structures.
