Chapter 5 Three Ramsey Theorists

Project by: John Ko, Haydn Park, and Karan Randhawa.

\(\textbf{Summary:}\) The main goal of this project was to better understand Ramsey Theory by interviewing those who are integral to it and presenting these details in a video format to the class. During this project, our group interviewed three mathematicians specializing in Ramsey theory. In the interview process, each group member has gained an insight to a deeper understanding of the modern math theory, as well as learned more about famous researchers in the field which have developed the theory from its origins. After interviewing multiple mathematicians, the goal then switched to creating a video that would highlight the aforementioned points to the rest of the class this semester.

By interviewing mathematicians in the field such as Steve Butler, Julian Sarahasbudhe, and Maria Axenovich our group members have been able to better understand the course material. Much like the Ramsey theory which is a separate field in math from the usual calculus, this particular interview presentation is relevant to the class as it is a more modern way of presenting relevant class material to peers. This project is also linked to the course material as the in-depth explanation of certain concepts that are taught in class help students better understand the intuition and math skills required to better understand the theory itself.

\(\textbf{Note:}\) What follows is taken from the video interviews we conducted in the Fall semester of 2020. The questions and answers you will see are not the totality of the whole interviews, but some of the interesting answers given by the experts.

Some of the answers were shortened and aren't one-to-one of the answers said on the videos.
