Opportunity Fest 2025 Top Category Winners

Technology Platforms & Services Category Top Winner: Mycel

Every day, trucks wait, payments lag, and brokers profit from the chaos between shippers and carriers. Drivers lose hours; businesses lose trust. We saw million-dollar rigs running like garage startups from the dot-com bubble, disconnected, delayed, and disoriented. Mycel closes that gap. It’s the network that connects every player in the freight industry, clients, drivers, and dispatch, in real time. Loads are matched instantly, docks prepare before arrival, payments trigger automatically, and communication flows without brokers siphoning value. Mycel transforms a fragmented industry into a synchronized ecosystem where time, trust, and capital finally move at the same speed.

Sustainability & Energy Category Top Winner: Subvision Robotics

Subvision Robotics is developing ZIMA, the world's first ship hull cleaning rover that uses the preventative power of UVC light to stop microscopic growth before it begins. Non abrasive treatment reduces drag, cuts fuel use and emissions, and protects coatings while meeting tightening port rules.

Reduce & Reuse Category Top Winner: RideWise

Our solution looks into the issue that students of SFU who commute daily face. Daily commuters face the issue where bus and skytrain services are often inefficient, due to delays or track issues. Some students also travel nearly an hour just for a one way commute to campus. In comparison, some students with a car travel less than half the time to get to campus. In order to tackle this situation, we’ve decided to create an app that will focus on reducing the number of single occupancy vehicles, saving costs for both drivers and riders, cutting emissions and traffic congestion, and building a community around commuting.

Future of Fashion Category Top Winner: Loopi

Loopi makes bag return and reuse second-nature. Reusable bags are collected at grocery store points where staff scan bags for tracking while app users can link their membership to earn points every time they borrow or return a bag. The Loopi app tracks your reuse stats and turns sustainable habits into real rewards (like groceries, ride-shares, and park passes!), making sustainability simple, fun, and rewarding.

Safety & Performance Category Top Winner: Endura

Endura aims to empower endurance athletes with fueling solutions that eliminate compromise and deliver personalized performance.

High Impact Innovator Runner-up: Mycel

Entrepreneur's Choice: HUD

An integrated heads-up display for motorcycle helmets, offering a safer and more convenient way for motorcyclists to access vital information without losing focus on the road.

FAQs

As an Opportunity Fest participant, can I find out what guest mentors will be attending ahead of time?

We will be updating our list of attending guest mentors closer to the event date, as we are still in the recruitment phase. We can notify participants in our emails when the list is updated and point in the direction of our website, but please note that the category designation of guest mentors will not be included, and that the list is continuously growing.

Can anyone attend Opportunity Fest to see the student projects?

Absolutely! Everyone is encouraged and welcome to witness the entrepreneurial minds of our participating SFU students and community. We are more than happy to have you attend!

Where can I request grates (black display grids) that my team would like to put posters on?

Each participating team can request a display grate (2 ft wide by about 6 ft tall) for showcasing materials through the team registration form, and we will get back to you by email.

Where can I request the AV requirements that my team needs?

For any AV requirements, please write it in team registration form, and we will get back to you by email. Please note that our ability to provide AV requirements is restricted, and we may not be able to accomodate everyone. We recommend borrowing equipment from the SFU library!
