SFU Cybersecurity Graduate Ahmed Tawfik Turns Passion into a Career at Fortinet
Originally from Egypt, Ahmed Amr Samir Tawfik has always been fascinated by technology and its power to shape the world around us.
While his early career focused on Systems Engineering, a bold pivot three years before his Master’s program led him into the Cybersecurity field, beginning with a leadership role managing cyber range operations at Qatar Computing Research Institute, Hamad Bin Khalifa University.
Describing it as a major challenge and “completely uncharted territory,” Ahmed designed and built realistic environments for attack-and-defense simulations. This experience pushed him beyond his comfort zone and sparked a deep passion for the field, ultimately leading him to pursue the Master of Cybersecurity at SFU, a decision he describes as both transformative and deeply rewarding.
Now, as Ahmed prepares to cross the stage at convocation this June, he reflects on the experiences that shaped his academic journey, the lessons learned, and what’s next in his career.
What was your most memorable moment from your time at SFU?
Some of my most memorable moments at SFU were also the most demanding—long nights spent working in the SEC-B labs with my group, collaborating on assignments, building projects, and preparing for presentations. Despite the pressure, those intense sessions were incredibly fulfilling and built a strong sense of teamwork and resilience.
Another highlight was serving as a Teaching Assistant for Cyber Lab I, a course I had previously excelled in as a student. Helping others navigate the lab and enhance their learning was deeply rewarding and gave me an opportunity to give back to a community that had supported me. These experiences not only strengthened my technical skills but also highlighted the importance of mentorship and collaboration.
How has your experience at SFU prepared you for your career path?
My time at SFU has been instrumental in preparing me for a career in cybersecurity. Cyber Lab I, led by Professor Mohammad Tayebi, was especially impactful. The course offered a perfect blend of technical depth, hands-on experience, and exposure to industry trends, thanks to guest speakers and real-world projects developed in collaboration with industry partners.
This practical, industry-focused approach gave me a deep understanding of the Canadian cybersecurity landscape and directly contributed to securing a Co-op position at Mirai Security, which became a key stepping stone toward professional growth.
What are your plans for the future?
Joining Fortinet has been a dream of mine since my first semester at SFU, when I participated in a Cyber Attack & Defense exercise organized by the company. My team ranked among the top performers, and the experience left a lasting impression, showcasing Fortinet’s leadership in the field.
I'm now thrilled to have joined Fortinet as a Senior Cybersecurity Specialist in Research and Development. This role allows me to fully pursue my passion for the intersection of cybersecurity and AI. I look forward to contributing to innovative solutions that enhance global digital security.
If you could give one piece of advice to incoming students, what would it be?
Start developing your soft skills and professional network early. While technical knowledge is essential, communication, teamwork, and networking are often the keys that open doors. These skills will amplify your technical abilities and create opportunities that can define your career.
Ahmed is also a proud husband and father of three amazing children, who keep him grounded and constantly motivated. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and following one’s passion even when it leads into uncharted territories.
Congratulations, Ahmed, on your graduation and new role and welcome to the SFU alumni community!
