JOB POSTING: Casual Preparator at SFU Galleries

SFU Galleries is looking to expand its roster of Preparators for periodic employment. Preparators will work closely with the Exhibitions Coordinator to install and deinstall exhibitions at all three SFU Galleries locations: SFU Gallery (Burnaby), Audain and Teck Gallery (Vancouver).

Responsibilities and Tasks

Preparators will work with the Exhibitions Coordinator to develop and execute plans for the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions. Regular tasks include but are not limited to repairing and painting walls, installing vinyl lettering, unpacking and packing artworks, installing two and three dimensional art works, installing A/V works, and exhibition lighting.

Requirements

- One year of experience working or volunteering in a museum or gallery or equivalent experience
- Capable of climbing ladders, operating a scissor lift (on job training provided), lifting up to 30lbs
- Working knowledge of power tools and materials commonly used for installation and painting.
- Experience installing Audio/Visual works consisting of monitors, projectors, media players and speakers
- Detail Oriented
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent creative problem-solving skills

Assets

- Experience with woodworking machines (tablesaw, drill press, mitre saw, etc)
- A driver’s license
- Completion of a Degree or Diploma in Fine Arts, Visual Arts or related field
- Working knowledge of BrightAuthor
- First Aid certification 

Frequency of work

SFU Galleries’ exhibition schedule consists of three professional exhibitions a year at Audain Gallery and SFU Gallery and one per year at Teck Gallery. Installation of SFU Gallery and Audain Gallery exhibitions are consecutive occurring in September/October, January, and May/June Depending on scale and difficulty, installations typically run 4 – 12 days, 7 hours a day, for 35 hour work weeks. 

Compensation

$22.00 - $26.00 per hour, based on experience.
