Screening: Through a Window: Projections at the Perel

Continuing SFU Galleries' look at visual art and SFU since 1965, SFU alumni and artists, Casey Wei and Cindy Mochizuki will project video from the windows of 112 West Hastings Street, formerly known as the Perel building. Named after the Perel Tailors who once operated out of the ground floor, this building was the site of numerous artist studios and artist run centres, including SFU visual art studios and the Perel Gallery.
At 8PM and 9:30PM Wei will present a short sound performance and a projected text-based montage titled HAIR, 2015. This work explores text's capacity to define spatial bounds and disrupt temporal rhythms. A projection of Wake,2006 by Mochizuki will begin at 8:30PM and 9:00PM. Wake is a fictional murder mystery that examines the act of remembering in relation to Hastings Park as the former site of a 'Manning Pool,' where Japanese Canadians were forcibly separated from their families, interned and exiled from their homes during WWII.
The performance and projections are best viewed from the West Hastings Street entrance to the Woodward's complex, beside TD Bank.
Cindy Mochizuki is a Vancouver-based artist. Her installation, performance, animation, drawing, and public projects engage space as fictional and documentary sites.
Casey Wei is a Vancouver-based artist and musician. Her practice intersects between documentary, public art, and performance, bringing together different communities through art and music.
