Scrivener's Monthly is pleased to present Misdirected Kiss: a presentation by Los Angeles-based artist Martine Syms. The piece looks at aspects of paralinguistics and the performance of speech as it relates to constructions of black identity.
Martine Syms uses publishing, video and performance to examine representations of blackness in popular culture. Recent work explores American situation comedy, black vernacular, feminist movements and radical traditions, speculative design and the colour purple. From 2007-2011 she was the co-director of the Chicago artist-run project space Golden Age, and she currently runs Dominica Publishing: an imprint dedicated to exploring blackness as a topic, reference, marker and audience in visual culture. She is the author of Implications and Distinctions: Format, Content and Context in Contemporary Race Film (2011).
