Prints from CPR Magic Lantern Slides 1885-1930

June 28 – August 3, 2007
SFU Gallery

This exhibition presents the first-ever chance to see prints from historical magic lantern slides, originally produced by the Canadian Pacific Railway to promote tourism and immigration to Canada. These hand-coloured slides, previously known only from images on posters and as book illustrations, have been converted to print form by Vancouver artist and magic lantern slide collector Michael Lawlor.

The original photographers’ names are rarely known, but their vision lives on as a testament to the creation of Canada as we know it today. The fifty images in this exhibition depict the country from Newfoundland to the British Columbian coast. They include rarely seen photographic material as well as iconic Canadian images, some of which reveal stages in the development of Canada reminiscent of the construction of the town of Deadwood in the television series of that name.

The exhibition has been organized for the SFU Gallery by Michael Lawlor and Bill Jeffries and is available for touring to other institutions.
