Unpacking Art: Lunchtime Talks on Works in the SFU Art Collection is a speaker series that invites members of the SFU community to "unpack" the context and the questions raised by works of art in the collection.
The final session for the fall will be led by Steve Dodge, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, who will explain the colourful effects caused by motor oil on wet pavement, as seen in Evan Lee’s Stain 2003 (series).
Steve Dodge is an experimental condensed matter physicist who specializes in the optical properties of solids. His research group works to develop the quantum theory of solids by studying how electrons in metals, electrical insulators, and superconductors respond to short pulses of laser light. He is a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Program in Quantum Materials.
Steve received his early education in physics at the Exploratorium, The Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception in San Francisco—first as a visitor, then as a student docent or "Explainer", then as an exhibit developer. He developed an awareness there of the close relationships among art, science, and play, which he now enjoys sharing with others.
This series encourages participation from audiences that are new to visual art and to the SFU Art Collection.
Evan Lee is a visual artist based in Vancouver, Canada. He is known for exhibitions of his experimental image-based work, but also for working across the range of media and subjects, as well as teaching and writing.
Unpacking Art is free and open to everyone. No advance preparation or registration is necessary. Bring your lunch.
