The Vancouver Street Caboose Exhibition

November 21, 2006 – March 3, 2007
Teck Gallery

Well into the 1970s, a fleet of wooden trailers, resembling gypsy wagons, served the City of Vancouver Engineering Department as portable tool-storage lockers, lunchrooms, and site offices. They were photographed in 1959/60 for inventory purposes.

The Vancouver Street Caboose Exhibition presents twenty-four vintage photographs of these City vehicles, providing an intriguing glimpse into Vancouver's recent past. These visually flamboyant wagons are long gone, replaced by a series of more modern, comfortable, and convenient-to-use trailers.

The images of these funky street cabooses act as a reminder of all the rough edges and eccentricities that Vancouver has erased in the process of becoming a large and modern city.

This exhibition was curated by Carol Sawyer and Bill Jeffries, with assistance from staff at the City of Vancouver Engineering Services, Equipment Services department.
