1. Boolean is a mathamatical process that analyzes whether an area is suitable or not depending on whatever variables that you choose.

2. Multiplication is most used in Boolean MCE as it overlays two images on top of each other and calculating an area that satisfies both criterias. Addition and subtraction calculates areas that include or exclude the second image.

3. Contraints and Factors MCE of a new ski resort in the Caucasus mountains.

Contraints

  • Resort must not be located in any protected areas and areas of frequent landslides/avalanches

  • Factors

  • Slope less than 5 degrees
  • Close to roads to minimize additional roadbuilding (1KM)

  • 4. The concepts of trade-off and risk apply to the ski resort by showing that the one criteria cannot be used to compensate for the lack of suitability for another criteria. For example, the distance to a road cannot compensate for other criteria such as distance to flat areas. Risk is applied to this by stating that the Boolean MCE only gives the minimum criteria, which results in areas that meet the minimum requirements. This may not be good enough for a real situation where the developer wants an area that goes beyond the minimum requirements.
