In this geographic information science project I hope to show that skate
parks are important geographic spaces for male youths to keep them out
of trouble, and that skate parks are a wise policy choice for
allocating park space and resources. The
multi-criteria evaluation question that I did
tried to answer was: Where in the GVRD
should a new skate park be located? In order to answer this important
question it was first necessary to start
out with some basic background research, which consisted of
Internet research. This research provided me with criteria that had
been used for other site determinations in other cities in North
America as well as in the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD).
From this criteria I selected the criteria that I felt were the most
important and for which I could obtain data for.
The way that I accomplished answering this
important question was to use the
software program Idrisi. In
Idrisi
there is a helpful tool called the decision wizard, which gives a step
by step approach to
conducting a multi-criteria evaluation. I used this decision wizard to
facilitate my multi-criteria evaluation. In the process of using the
decision wizard the fuzzy images were created before the final overlay
was conducted. The decision wizard facilitates the overlay of multiple
criteria to come up with a suitability image.
