Abstract

This seminar will largely focus on the unique times and shared features of key organizations where I worked or where I was involved. It includes, the Forestry Department of Environment Canada, the Institute of Resource Ecology at UBC, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the University of Florida, and the Santa Fe Institute. It culminates in the new organizations created by the work, i.e. the Resilience Alliance and finally, the Stockholm Resilience Center, Sweden. The general lesson: they all have their own adaptive cycle, and fundamental innovation flowers for a shortish time when they start, or when they swing into a new pattern. What does that say about change, when change is needed?
