APSA, CUPE, POLYPARTY, SFUFA, TSSU
January Collective Bargaining Update
SFU is currently engaged in collective bargaining with its unions and professional association.
The university’s bargaining philosophy is oriented toward collaborative negotiations that meet the core interests of all parties and upholds the sustainable and best interests for the entire SFU community.
Negotiations are also guided by the Province's 2025 Balanced Measures Mandate, which applies to all public sector employers with unionized employees whose collective agreement expired on or after December 31, 2024.
The elements of the 2025 mandate include maximum allowable wage increases of 12% over the 4-year term, broken down as follows:
- Year 1 – 3% general wage increase
- Year 2 – 3% general wage increase
- Year 3 – 3% general wage increase
- Year 4 – 3% general wage increase
- A 0.2% flexibility allocation fund in years 2 and 4 to support mutually beneficial outcomes for employees and the university, which may include initiatives to support recruitment, retention, or training and development.
Now that these terms are set, the university, employee groups and negotiators are working together to address monetary proposals in alignment with the Provincial mandate, as well as discuss non-monetary proposals for each employee group.

Monthly Bargaining Updates by Employee Group
ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL STAFF ASSOCIATION (APSA)
- The university and APSA began negotiations in January, with several days of productive discussions from January 12-15 and again on January 19, 21 and 22.
- The parties are scheduled to meet again on February 9 and 11.
CANADIAN UNION OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES (CUPE) LOCAL 3338
- The university and CUPE began collective bargaining and bargained on January 8, 13, 15 and 22. The parties exchanged monetary and non-monetary proposals.
- The parties meet again on February 5 and working to secure more dates in February.
POLY PARTY
- The university and Poly Party last met in December and were unable to find mutually agreeable bargaining dates in January.
- Poly Party has indicated that they are unable to meet in February, and the parties are working to confirm bargaining dates in March and April.
SFU FACULTY ASSOCIATION (SFUFA)
- SFU and SFUFA met on January 26 and have another meeting scheduled in early February as well as further sessions throughout the spring term.
- Both parties continue to exchange proposals and to work through both monetary and non-monetary items.
TEACHING SUPPORT STAFF UNION (TSSU)
- The university and TSSU bargained on January 15, discussing monetary and non-monetary proposals.
- The parties will continue discussions on February 10 and are working to secure additional dates this spring.
