APSA Basic Agreement Update: SFU and APSA Conclude Mediation
On June 26, SFU initiated the process to renegotiate the APSA Basic Agreement.
After SFU and APSA shared their respective proposals and began the renegotiation process, the parties agreed to non-binding mediation on September 8, which has now concluded.
Mediation is a constructive step in the negotiation process, and we look forward to receiving the Mediator’s recommendations.
Why does SFU want to renegotiate the Basic Agreement?
The Basic Agreement is intended to support a collaborative, effective and “harmonious” working relationship between the university and APSA and its members.
Many B.C. post-secondary institutions aim for a “consultative partnership” model with non-union employee associations. The employer has final decision-making authority over the employee terms and conditions of employment, while the association serves as a formal partner for consultation, advocacy, feedback and collaborative problem-solving on behalf of the members.
In recent years, there have been indicators that improvements to the relationship are needed from the university’s perspective. The university’s objective is to create a more effective and sustainable relationship in which the parties can engage directly, address issues at the appropriate level, and work toward solutions through negotiation rather than positioning for a third-party decision.
What does this mean for APSA members?
There is no immediate impact to APSA members. Roles, responsibilities, compensation and working conditions remain unchanged.
Where can I get more information?
Answers to these, and other frequently asked questions, can be found in the APSA Basic Agreement to be Renegotiated article on the Collective Bargaining hub.
