UNIVERSITY NEWS

SFU TO CREATE FIRST BLACK STUDENT CENTRE

This year, SFU committed to establishing a Black Student Centre—a long-term, permanent support service on campus where Black students will be able to connect to community, mentorship, support and more. Although the centre is still in its early stages, work is underway to ensure that Black students are at the heart of the planning process.

"Put simply," says SFU student Balqees Jama, "the centre will be a place for Black students to thrive."

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE TRIP HOME

Winter weather conditions may result in safety issues for public transit users and drivers. Bus service is interrupted and cancelled by snow storms, leaving community members stranded with no alternate option to travel home. The Burnaby Mountain Gondola will make commuting to SFU more reliable for everyone. Make your voice heard and help bring a gondola to SFU.

STRAND HALL ANNEX DEMOLITION

Please be advised that the Strand Hall Annex is slated for demolition, which will be complete by the end of the year. Civil site work will ramp up next week with a construction safety plan and traffic management plan in place.

On Friday, November 26, Strand Hall Annex demolition work will be particularly noisy due to hydrovac work from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. This work prepares the site for the upcoming First Peoples’ Gathering House project. Please contact gloria_kwong_2@sfu.ca for questions about this work. Thank you for your patience during this time.

From 7:00 am Tuesday, December 7 to 6:00 pm Wednesday, December 8, University Drive West between West Campus Road and the West Parkade entrance lane on the SFU Burnaby Campus will be temporarily closed. All vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian traffic will be detoured. This is to accommodate the removal of the Residence Phase 2 tower crane.

Interested in developing your instructional skills to better meet the needs of your multilingual students? Join SFU's Centre for Educational Excellence for a seminar series in Spring 2022. Apply by Friday, November 26.
