SFU'S CONTAINMENT LEVEL 3 LAB BROADENS INFECTIOUS DISEASE RESEARCH BEYOND COVID-19

While many university community members worked remotely in 2020, Dwayne Ashman, operations director of SFU's Containment Level 3 (CL3) Lab, was on the Burnaby campus diligently helping set up the lab—the university's newest core facility. The lab is one of a few biosecure facilities in Canada that is certified by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

In this Q&A, Ashman shares how the lab ensures the community's safety, what kind of research it welcomes and why he is looking forward to more in-person activities.

SFU RESEARCHERS LAUNCH OUT OF THIS WORLD VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE

Researchers in SFU’s iSpace Lab have created a virtual reality experience—Earthgazing—which aims to help astronauts deal with isolation and confinement while also supporting those back on Earth suffering from COVID-related loneliness.

The study launched last week as part of SIRIUS 2021, as a "crew" of six people will spend the next eight months in a facility, located in Russia, modeling a spacecraft heading to Mars.

Souvenir by Chantal Gibson, from the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT), is bookending the country.

The installation features a collection of 2000 unique souvenir spoons from countries around the world hanging in rows and spray painted matte black, calling up a history of Black bodies displayed and displaced.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SFU OBSERVES REMEMBRANCE DAY

All SFU campuses will be closed on Thursday, November 11 to observe Remembrance Day. We encourage SFU community members to pause and remember. All SFU campuses will resume operations on Friday, November 12.

Please note that the next What's On newsletter will be delivered on Friday, November 12. Submissions for the upcoming edition will be accepted until Wednesday, November 10 at 9 a.m.

REMINDER: UPLOAD PROOF OF VACCINATION

If you have declared that you are vaccinated, you must submit a photo of your B.C. Vaccine Card to show proof of your vaccination to the secure and confidential Thrive website.

The vaccine declaration is mandatory for SFU community members. Getting vaccinated is the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves and our community from COVID-19.

As per recent Provincial Health Officer (PHO) Orders, mandatory vaccination orders have been issued that cover a range of sectors. Several of these orders may affect the activities of SFU faculty, staff and students. Please visit the SFU Return to Campus website to determine if you—or those who you work with—are affected.

Many SFU community members require assistive equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers, for mobility. During harsh weather, these individuals may face difficulties travelling up Burnaby Mountain. The Burnaby Mountain Gondola will make the Burnaby campus more accessible for all community members. Tell a friend, a colleague or a classmate and help bring a gondola to SFU.

Calling all SFU researchers: The Inter-American University Organization for Higher Education has launched a new funding opportunity for collaborative research projects supporting any of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Submit your proposal before Sunday, December 5.

Up to $3,000 is available to fund SFU students—like 2018's We Are the World—who want to work with community partners to create meaningful impact. Please contact tiffany_chen_11@sfu.ca to set up an in-class presentation to learn about the SFU Student-Community Engagement Competition.

The Warren Gill Award for Community Impact recognizes a faculty or staff member who demonstrates a significant positive impact in the social, economic, environmental or cultural fabric of one or more of the communities SFU serves. Submit your nomination by Friday, December 10.
