SFU SEEKING INDIGENOUS INPUT ON PROPOSED MEDICAL SCHOOL

SFU is engaging the internal community on a new approach to medical education in B.C.—one that focuses on community-embedded, socially accountable and culturally relevant health care that meets the needs of Indigenous communities across the province, as well as diverse, underserved and historically marginalized populations in the Fraser Health region.

The programming will embed Indigenous ways of knowing and being, while teaching cultural safety and humility. This approach will be a key step in addressing the anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination outlined in the In Plain Sight report, tackling inequities and transforming health care. Indigenous students, faculty and staff at SFU are invited to an information session and discussion on the early planning for the proposed school.

STUDENT AWARD BOOSTS CONFIDENCE AND INSPIRES DREAMS OF YOUNG LEADER

Fourth-year economics student Swetal Patel—a self-described "non-extraordinary" student—is everything but. Patel is a recipient of the Pamela Yoon Award in Economics, a generous gift established to recognize persistence in academics and charitable interests.

Read more about her thoughts on education, fiscal responsibility and the importance of giving back in building a sustainable future.

MELTING GLACIERS COULD PRODUCE NEW PACIFIC SALMON HABITAT

A study led by SFU researchers has found that the retreat of glaciers in the Pacific mountains of western North America could produce more than 6,000 kilometres of potential new Pacific salmon habitat by the year 2100.

"If we want to protect salmon futures, this information should inform environmental decision-making and habitat protection," says SFU biology professor Jonathan Moore.

WINTER BREAK REMINDER: MAKE THAT LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE

Before you head off for the winter break, be sure to review this handy list of everything you can do to keep our campus and community safe. Set your reminders to secure items in your workspace, turn off office lights and more.

Buses en route to SFU can be subject to mechanical difficulties and long lineups, resulting in delays for those who commute to campus. A gondola to SFU will reduce these delays and create a simpler, more reliable way to reach campus. Make your voice heard and help bring a gondola to SFU.

SFU faculties and departments can now take advantage of new funding opportunities to hire students for Spring 2022.
