SFU PROFESSOR SHARES ASIAN/CANADIAN CULTURE IN NEW ONLINE SERIES

Humanities and Global Asia professor Shuyu Kong is co-hosting a unique online programme, the Chinese/Canadian Writing Speaker Series, with SFU’s David Lam Centre and VPL. The series showcases the diversity of Chinese Canadian writing and explores the possibility of connecting different worlds through language, history and imagination. "Sharing literature is one of the best ways to cultivate our capacity to become world citizens," Kong says.

UNRAVELLING THE MYSTERY OF ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is a disease found in approximately 10 per cent of women worldwide, yet it is unclear why some women have it and others don’t. SFU researchers Bernard Crespi (pictured above) and Natalie Dinsdale developed a new theory, with direct implications for endometriosis treatment, that may solve this mystery.

The IT team within SFU's second-largest faculty, SFU Science, are normally busy enough supporting 350 faculty and staff as well as hundreds of on-site labs and classrooms. An abrupt move to online learning and teaching meant they were suddenly responsible for supporting virtual learning for 4,400 students and facilitating work-from-home solutions for staff and faculty. The team has been presented with a Staff Achievement Team Award for transitioning to a virtual environment for the first time in its 56-year history.

Studying virtually, especially via massive open online courses, has become very popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. This week’s Scholarly Impact features SFU Education professor Tenzin Doleck, who is studying ways to optimize social learning networks — an important part of online learning.

Please note that SFU will observe Victoria Day on Monday, May 24th. Campus access as per COVID-19 regulations will resume on Tuesday, May 25th.
