Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum Wins Prestigious Architectural Award of Merit

SFU Galleries is thrilled to announce that Hariri Pontarini Architects and Iredale Architecture have won a prestigious Canadian Architect Award of Merit for their design of the Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum, currently under construction on SFU’s Burnaby campus. The awards were announced today by Canadian Architect, the national magazine of record for architects across Canada.

The jurors commented: “A simple and refined approach to museum design. The overall massing is lighthearted and creates relationships with the landscape at varying scales and proportions. There is an alternating relationship with light and view between foreground and background which creates visual interest. The interior material palette is refined and not over-designed.”

Now in their 56th year, the Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence are the highest recognition for excellence in the design stage in the Canadian architectural sector. By focusing on commissioned but not yet completed projects, the program recognizes design ambition and supports an overall culture of design excellence.

Of the 218 photo submissions received for this year’s award program, the jury selected only five projects for Awards of Excellence and eight projects for Awards of Merit. “I’m delighted that the national architectural community has recognized the sensitivity with which HPA’s design both acknowledges and responds to its surroundings,” remarks SFU Galleries Director Kimberly Phillips, “and the way in which—through deft handling of scale, volume and light—that design strives to embrace its visitors and encourage them to feel at home.”

The award-winning projects are announced here and general jury comments on this year’s submissions can be viewed here. The winning projects are described in full, along with images and complete juror comments, in the December 2023 issue of Canadian Architect, available in print and online.
