Transform the SFU Experience, Resources and work tools
Prepare for Canvas Cloud: new web locations and holiday support
Starting in Spring 2026, all SFU courses will run on Canvas Cloud, a vendor-hosted platform located in Canada.
Where to access Canvas
- The new Canvas Cloud is available at canvas-new.sfu.ca.
- In January 2026, Canvas Cloud will move to canvas.sfu.ca.
- The old Canvas will shift to canvas-old.sfu.ca. Past courses and student submissions will remain accessible on the old Canvas.
What instructors need to do
Instructors teaching in spring 2026 need to set up their courses in Canvas Cloud. If they want to reuse content from a previous course, they will need to copy the content they wish to reuse into Canvas Cloud.
We recommend completing your course setup and migration early so instructors—and the Canvas support team—have time to resolve any issues. Limited support will be available during the holiday break, so finishing ahead of time will help avoid delays.
How to get started
- Log in to the new platform: canvas-new.sfu.ca.
- Reusing content? Use the Course Migration Tool to copy a past Canvas course into a Canvas Cloud sandbox.
- Important: You must import the content from your Canvas Cloud sandbox into your official spring 2026 course shell. Content in the sandbox is not visible to students.
- If a course is cross-listed, submit a request to the Service Desk for assistance.
Learn more about how to copy content from a past course into Canvas Cloud by visiting the migrating courses on the Transitioning to Canvas Cloud Platform webpage.
Automatic course shells
Course shells will be created automatically for any courses scheduled in goSFU with an assigned instructor. If a course does not appear, instructors can create it manually using the "Start a New Course" tool.
Where to get help
Access guidance on migrating courses on the Transitioning to Canvas Cloud Platform webpage or by attending one of the Transitioning to Canvas Cloud workshops.
Get help with migration or course setup issues by contacting the Canvas support team through Service Desk.
