Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Laboratory with accompanying lectures designed to give practical experience in advanced contemporary molecular biology techniques. Projects will involve recombinant gene and protein manipulations to investigate the dynamics of proteins within living cells.

COURSE DETAILS:

Course description:
Laboratory with accompanying lectures designed to give practical experience in advanced techniques currently used in molecular biology and biotechnology. Projects will involve recombinant gene and protein manipulations for investigating functional mechanisms of genes and their encoded products.

A. LAB SCHEDULE:

      1.  Scheduled lab periods: Labs scheduled as per academic calendar
      2. Open lab periods: After the first month, additional drop-in lab times for short or extended lab procedures (consult with TAs and lab instructor)

B. FLOW-CHARTS & LAB BOOKS:
      1. Flow-Charts: Evaluated by TAs and/or lab instructor every scheduled lab and randomly during open lab hours
      2. Lab books: Evaluated by TAs and/or lab instructor on random basis

C. LAB QUIZZES AND PROBLEM SETS:
      1. Lab quizzes: best 4 of 5 marked (NOTE POLICY ON ABSENCES)
      2. Problem sets: take home problems that emphasize basic lab knowledge

D. FINAL REPORT:
      1. Final report: due last day of classes by 5 pm (LATE REPORTS NOT MARKED)

E. FINAL ORAL PRESENTATION:
      1. Oral presentations: Last 2 lecture/lab periods. 20-25 min.  All participate.




Grading

  • A. Lab preparedness, performance, organization 30%
  • B. Lab quizzes and problem sets 25%
  • C. Final report 25%
  • D. Final oral presentation 20%

REQUIREMENTS:

Prerequisites:  MBB308, MBB309W and MBB331 with a minimum grade of B-.

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

A non-refundable fee of $20 will be assessed for the laboratory manual.
