CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An examination of tourism from the perspectives of sociology and anthropology, focusing primarily upon the social and cultural impacts of tourism and the social policy implications of tourism development in different societies.

COURSE DETAILS:

An examination of tourism from the perspectives of sociology and anthropology, focusing primarily upon the social and cultural impacts of tourism and the social policy implications of tourism development in different societies. Topics addressed will include ecotourism, voluntourism, medical tourism, heritage tourism, sex tourism, dark tourism and more. Class discussion and assignments will be oriented towards developing an understanding of tourist motivations, the experiences of tourism workers, and how a tourist destination is created.

NOTES:

Grading: Where a final exam is scheduled and you do not write the exam or withdraw from the course before the deadline date, you will be assigned an N grade. Unless otherwise specified on the course outline, all other graded assignments in this course must be completed for a final grade other than N to be assigned.
