Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Lectures and labs provide a survey of the major groups of algae, including cyanobacteria and other microscopic algae, seaweeds and freshwater algae. Addresses aspects of evolution, taxonomy, ecology, anatomy, life history, and the importance of algae in our lives. Students who have taken BISC 326 first may not then take this course for further credit.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Recognize a diversity of algae, especially local species, using their key characteristics.
  • Explain how scientists are elucidating Algal evolutionary history and relationships.
  • Develop a toolkit of observational, experimental and analytical skills.
  • Share your knowledge, skills and interests in algae with others.
  • Develop a deeper appreciation and respect for algae.

FIELD TRIP: Please note that the 2023 Bamfield Field Trip for BISC 327 is cancelled.  Instead, there will be a day field trip to Stanley Park on September 28th and 29th for the Thursday and Friday labs, respectively.   Students are expected to provide their own transportation to Stanley Park.  Please plan accordingly and be prepared to arrive at the park by 10:00AM.
