Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Focuses on theory and curriculum of school physical education programs. Emphasis is given to the movement education orientation as it pertains to the various program activities and approaches applicable to primary, intermediate and secondary levels.

COURSE DETAILS:

Education 459 Instructional Activities in Physical and Health Education will introduce principles and practices for teaching, developing, and planning, Physical and Health Education classes, which reflect the new Physical and Health Education curriculum. This course emphasizes PHE best practices, leadership techniques, teaching methodology, and a combination of hard and soft skills. The course will examine the curriculum organizers of Physical Literacy and Active Living. Teaching processes include lecture, modeling, discussion, group projects, peer teaching experiences, practical skills sessions, and experiential learning, as they pertain to the various program activities and approaches applicable to elementary, middle, and secondary levels.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

  • To learn the knowledge, skills, and attitude, to effectively teach Physical and Health Education to students in a variety of grade levels.
  • To acquire various strategies, skills, and best practices for teaching Physical Education.
  • To become familiar with various types of pedagogy, skills, and knowledge necessary for teaching Physical Education in a variety of environments.
  • To learn how to meet the needs of diverse groups of learners in Physical Education.
  • To become familiar with various types of assessment necessary for teaching physical education.
  • To learn how to integrate various/multiple curricula into the context of Physical Education classes and experiences.
  • To investigate ways in which the First Nations Principles of Learning can be embedded within the PHE curriculum
