COURSE DETAILS:

This course surveys a variety of topics in international finance and open-economy macroeconomics. The course is divided into three main parts. The first part will discuss international capital flows. The second part will discuss theories of exchange rate determination. The final part of the course will focus on policy issues. The topics here are flexible, and will depend on current events. Students should stay informed about ongoing developments in the global economy!

The format of the course will be a mixture of traditional lecture material and classroom discussion. Participation in the class discussion is required. The course will presume that students are comfortable with analyzing economic models.

Grading

  • A Group Project 30%
  • Miderm Exam 35%
  • Final Exam 35%

NOTES:

The course grade will be based on a final exam (35%), a midterm exam (35%), and a group project (30%). Students will be asked to present a brief summary of their project to the rest of the class.

REQUIRED READING:

There is no textbook for this course. Much of the lecture material will be based on a manuscript by Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe and Martin Uribe, which will be available online. Several shorter popular press articles will also be posted online as we go along.
