CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
A survey of assessment methods that contribute to improving teaching and learning, and for making judgments and decisions about qualities of teaching, the classroom environment, and student achievement and growth. Topics include: goal and task analysis, validity and reliability, observing and assessing classroom processes and environments, self-report methods, assessing student achievement, published tests of achievement and aptitude, marking and reporting.
COURSE DETAILS:
This interactive course employs arts-based and imaginative pedagogies to introduce students to the theoretical and practical dimensions of K-12 classroom assessment. With a focus on the B.C. K-12 learning context and their own teaching, the course will afford students opportunities to develop both theoretical and practical understanding of core assessment topics (e.g. methods of formative and summative assessment, rubrics etc.), to explore the pedagogical role of assessment, to identify the features of quality assessment, and to wrestle with issues in assessment (e.g. decolonizing assessment practices, equity, authenticity, differentiation).
COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
Through successfully participating in this course, students will / be able to:
- articulate and reflect upon their personal experiences, beliefs, and values related to assessment of student learning
- describe B.C. K-12 assessment/evaluation/reporting requirements
- explain key concepts and characteristics of quality assessment
- outline key issues and challenges related to assessment
- understand and apply practices that can help to decolonize assessment
- select and/or design appropriate assessment procedures based on purpose, need, and instructional situation
- create and evaluate assessment tools for use in their own teaching
