6A10.10 Blackboard Optics

Concepts

Ray optics, lenses, mirrors, total internal reflection, index of refraction

Overview

The blackboard optics demo includes a ray box, various clear plastic lenses and shapes, and mirrors. It can be used to demonstrate many kinds of optics phenomena, including total internal reflection and image formation.

Details

Equipment

  • [1] Blackboard optics kit
  • [1] Ray box with power supply
  • [2] Magnetic optical mounts
  • [1] Long extension cord
  • [1] Cart or chair

Classroom Assembly

  1. Mount ray box on blackboard.
  2. Place ray box power supply on chair or cart underneath and make necessary electrical connections.
  3. Adjust rays to be parallel.
  4. Place desired optical elements on board using magnetic mounts.
  5. Unplug ray box from power supply.

Script

  1. Dim the room lights at the front.
  2. Plug in the ray box.
  3. Adjust rays and optical elements as desired.

Technicals

  • There's an optimal position for the light bulb in the ray box to get more-or-less equal brightness for all five rays. On this unit, it's roughly middle-right of the socket, with orientation determined by the KEP sticker being right-way up.
