5K20.20 Eddy Current Plates

Concepts

Braking effect of induced eddy current, conductivity of metals

Overview

The motion of a solid metal plate moving in and out between the poles of a strong magnet is damped out by eddy currents. When the slotted edge of the plate is used, the braking effect of induced eddy current is greatly reduced.

Details

Equipment

  • [1] Strong magnet
  • [1] Aluminum plate
  • [1] Copper plate

Script

  1. Slide the unbroken edge of the aluminum plate in and out between the poles of the magnet.
  2. Slide the slotted edge of the aluminum plate in and out between the poles of the magnet.
  3. Repeat step 1 to 2 using the copper plate.
