Policy Consultation Feedback

Below is a summary of policy consultations that have taken place in 2025 and 2026. These consultations invited feedback from the university community to shape revisions and ensure our policies reflect SFU’s shared values and priorities.

Each consultation included an open call for input via the SFU Policy Gazette and other university-wide communications. Feedback received has helped ensure that new and revised policies balance inclusivity, operational effectiveness, and responsiveness to community needs. 

We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to share their thoughts and insights during the consultation process. Your feedback is deeply valued and played an important role in shaping our understanding of the necessary updates to the policy. While we carefully reviewed all submissions, not all feedback can be incorporated into the final version. This approach ensures that our decisions remain focused, effective, and aligned with the consultation’s objectives. We appreciate your engagement and continued support.

GP17: Health and Safety

  • Status: Approved by the Board in March 2026
  • Contact: ehrs_sfu@sfu.ca
  • University-wide consultation period: December 17, 2025 - January 30, 2026
  • Key changes following consultation: Clarifying roles and responsibilities related to safety training for all SFU employees, students and contractors. Defining procedures and responsibilities related to impairment in academic and workplace environments.

R30.04 Copyright Compliance and Administration

  • Status: Approved by the Board in January 2026

  • University-wide consultation period: October 17 - November 10, 2025
    • The Copyright Office also hosted a virtual information sessions and Q&As on November 6, 2025.
  • Key changes following consultation: Revision of policy to reflect new Fair Dealing Guidelines. Change of Policy Sponsor from Vice-President, Research to Provost and Vice-President, Academic.

GP18: Human Rights and GP 47: Bullying and Harassment

R30.03: Intellectual Property

  • Status: Approved by the Board in September 2025

  • University-wide consultation period: February 14 – March 18, 2025
    • The Technology Licensing Office also hosted virtual information sessions and Q&As on February 25 and March 18.
  • Key changes following consultation: In response to community concerns regarding teaching materials, the decision was made to split the policy into two: one covering research-based IP and another (to be developed) on IP related to teaching materials. The new research-only policy is being finalized, while current provisions on teaching IP remain in effect pending future consultation on a separate policy.
