Congratulations to Aidan Kits from the lab and colleagues from FORM Swim and the University of Aalborg (Denmark) for publishing a study that evaluated the validity of heart rate measurement by smart swim goggles. In this study, we compared heart rate recordings from the goggles with those from a chest strap measured in fitness swimmers during an assigned workout. We analyzed the data at four levels of aggregation: individual data points and data averaged over intervals, the main set, and whole workout. In general, we observed that goggle heart rates and those measured by the "gold standard" chest strap differed less than one beat per minute on average, leading us to conclude that the goggle data could be used for heart-rate-based training load monitoring.
