Sungeun (Paul) Oh
Postdoctoral Fellow, SFU
Sungeun (Paul) Oh is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Simon Fraser University specializing in quantum communication and photonic quantum technologies. His work focuses on building entangled photon sources and long-distance quantum key distribution, including contributions to the QEYSSat mission.
Hamish Johnson
MSc Student, SFU
Hamish is a Master's student at SFU building modular systems to prototype the future quantum internet. As a member of the Quantum Internet Systems Lab, he is building a deployable optical ground station for inter-metropolitan, free-space, quantum networking. He also works on entangled photon sources and testing novel sensor designs to make these systems more efficient. He is particularly interested in entanglement networking, photonic and neuromorphic computing, and embedded system design. Beyond the hardware, he is invested in using communications theory to probe the intersection of the role of photojournalism with new networked media technologies and open data. His work is motivated by a curiosity in how we can understand our universe beyond our physical senses, and a passion for prototyping---a perspective shaped in part by 'How It's Made' and 'Mythbusters.' In his free time, he invests himself into the Pacific Northwest and works on analog cameras.
Wilson Wu
PhD Student, SFU
Wilson is a PhD student in the Quantum Information Systems Lab. He previously completed his MSc under the supervision of Thomas Jennewein, developing a quantum light source for the Quantum Encryption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat) mission. His research focuses on developing entangled photon sources for quantum memory networks and exploring applications of quantum networking to quantum telescopes.
Howard Schimmer
MSc Student, SFU
Howard Schimmer is a Master's student at Simon Fraser University. He is supervised by Dr. Thomas Jennewein in the Quantum Internet Systems Lab and co-supervised by Dr. Daniel Higginbottom in the Silicon Quantum Technologies Lab.
Howard's research focuses on integrating the silicon T centre into the upcoming Vancouver Quantum Network (QVan). Silicon T centres are promising quantum memories due to their long-lived electron and nuclear spin with coherence times of 2.1 ms and 1.1 s, respectively. He is developing a quantum frequency conversion system to convert T centre photons from O-band to NIR enabling links between satellite and ground-based nodes.
When not involved in the lab Howard enjoys reading philosophy, collecting ancient coins, and fencing.
