Since 2022, SFU’s Black community has gathered annually to celebrate graduating Black students through the Black Brilliance Graduation Celebration.

This signature event honours the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black graduates while celebrating the diverse cultures, identities, and communities that shape the Black experience at SFU.

The celebration creates a space for connection, recognition, and collective joy, allowing graduates to reflect on their journeys, celebrate their accomplishments, and honour the communities that supported them along the way.

Each celebration features:

  • Recognition of graduating Black students
  • Student speeches and reflections
  • Cultural performances and artistic expressions
  • Ceremonial Kente stole presentation
  • Community gathering with family, friends, mentors, and supporters

KENTE STOLES

As part of the Black Brilliance Graduation Celebration, graduating students receive a Kente stole, a meaningful symbol of achievement, cultural pride, and connection to the Black community.

The tradition of gifting Kente stoles honours graduates’ journeys while celebrating the histories, cultures, and communities that have supported them throughout their academic experiences.

Graduating Black students can pre-order their Kente stole as part of their Black Brilliance Graduation Celebration experience.
