SCI 190 - Special Topics in Science Interdisciplinarity (3)

Subject matter normally spans the expertise of at least two departments/units. The exact assignment of units (1, 2, or 3) will be announced prior to each term. This course can be repeated once for credit. Variable units: 1, 2, 3. Prerequisite: Only Faculty of Science students may take this course.

SCI 191 - Introduction to Modern Scientific Research (1)

Introduction to research being performed in the Faculty of Science. Students attend seminars in which current research topics in the Faculty of Science are introduced at a level suitable for first and second year students. This course spans disciplines in the Faculty of Science.

SCI 192 - 'The Science Around Us' Interdisciplinary Science for Pre-Service Teachers (4)

An introduction to science inquiry, the processes of doing science, and the science around us. This studio format course engages future teachers in key biology, chemistry, physics and Earth sciences topics through the core competencies outlined in the BC K-8 curriculum. Connections between the sciences are highlighted through themes such as climate change and energy. Breadth-Science.

SCI 300 - Science and its Impact on Society (3)

The impact of science in our society. This course introduces upper level university students to all facets of science and their resulting technologies. Governmental policies often involve far-reaching scientific/technological decisions and this course attempts to provide a scientific perspective to help achieve rational and effective policies. Not open to students in the Faculty of Science or the Schools of Computing Science, Engineering Science. Prerequisite: 60 units. Breadth-Science.

SCI 301 - Science Communication: An Introduction (3)

As the role of science in society grows, so too does the need for effective science communication. Students will explore why we communicate science, the importance of knowing your audience, and best practices for a range of science communication approaches from traditional media, face to face, to online. Prerequisite: 60 units towards a BSc degree or permission of instructor.

SCI 390 - Special Topics in Science Interdisciplinarity (3)

Subject matter spans the expertise of at least two departments/units. An experiential capstone in this course, as part of the assessment of student performance, is a requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructional team.
