The Politics of South Asia POL 304 (4)

Introduction to the government and politics of South Asia. Focuses on long-term effects of colonialism, state formation, democracy, insurgency, the rise of lower caste and religious parties, the rise of Hindutva and ethnic riots. Connects these phenomena to broader debates in comparative politics on democratization and ethnic conflict. Prerequisite: Six lower division units in political science or permission of the department. Students with credit for POL 339 under the title "Politics of South Asia" may not take this course for further credit. Breadth-Humanities.
