Hypoyhermia Survival Guide

OUTDOOR COLDNESS ALARM

3 HYPOTHERMIA STAGES

Brief Intro of Hypothermia

Hypothermia occurs when core body temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius. This occurs when the body’s ability to generate heat by burning calories, muscle exertion and shivering is overwhelmed by heat loss. Heat is lost in four ways; radiation to a cold environment, conduction through contact with cold surfaces, convection from wind and water currents and evaporation of moisture.

Mild Hypothermia

  • Bouts of shivering
  • Grogginess, poor judgment, muddled thinking, and abnormal behaviour
  • Normal breathing and pulse

Moderate Hypothermia

  • Violent shivering, or shivering has stopped altogether
  • Inability to think and pay attention (for example, victim cannot understand what is being said)
  • Shallow breathing, slurred speech, or poor body co-ordination(for example, a stumbling gait)
  • Slow, weak pulse

Severe Hypothermia

  • Shivering stopped
  • Unconsciousness
  • Little or no breathing
  • Weak, irregular, or non-existent pulse
  • Dilated (wide open) pupils, so that the victim may appear dead but is still alive

PREVENTION

KALMONT MONTAIN SAFETY

Wear Warm Head Covering

Most body heat is lost through the head.

KALMONT MONTAIN SAFETY

Protect Your Feet & Hands

Wear waterproof boots.

KALMONT MONTAIN SAFETY

Drink Non-Alcoholic Warm Fluids

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia.

KALMONT MONTAIN SAFETY

Avoid Alcohol

Even small amounts of alcohol increase body cooling.

TREATMENT

Self Treatment

Get in the Sleeping Bag

Stuff your losse gear into your sleeping bag. This will reduce the volumn of air inside, allowing it into warm up faster

Pack Dry Leaves

Pack dry leaves, ferns or any other forest debris around the sides of your sleeping bag, for added insulation.

Curl Yourself

Curl into the heat escape lessening position (help). It reduces heat loss while you wait for assistance.

Partner Treatment

If you are shivering, you are probably getting warmer. Shivering is your body's defense against cold, and can increase your body temp by 36 F per hour.

Heat Treatment

Place chemical heat packs on major arteries to warm your blood: the neck, armpits & groin.

Chemical Heat Packs

Chemical heat packs provide up to 110 F for up to 10 hours.
