SFU Multifaith Centre receives Queen's Platinum Jubilee Award

May 16, 2023

The SFU Multifaith Centre has been awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award in recognition of people or organizations whose service has made meaningful and significant contributions to the community. The award was presented to spiritual support workers of the Centre by Terry Beech, Member of Parliament for Burnaby North-Seymour.

The award, which commemorates the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne, celebrates contributions in a variety of areas including the arts, science, innovation, community service, healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, sports, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“We are incredibly honoured that the Centre has been recognized with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award. I’m so proud of the engaged community we have here that are dedicated to serving students, staff and faculty of faith at SFU,” said Seth Greenham, Director of the Multifaith Centre.

The Centre was among 40 organizations to be chosen in Burnaby North-Seymour for the award.

“I’m pleased to present the Jubilee Award in recognition of the Multifaith Centre's efforts in providing a safe and welcoming space for individuals to explore their faith and learn about other religious traditions. Your work in facilitating workshops, seminars, and events that promote interfaith dialogue and understanding has undoubtedly fostered a culture of inclusivity and mutual respect. The Multifaith Centre has become a beacon of hope and a model for promoting interfaith harmony, compassion, and cooperation,” said Beech.

He added for many international students, SFU is their first experience with Canadian culture and that the SFU Multifaith Centre perfectly embodies Canadian values of diversity and inclusion by giving students a place to be themselves.

“The Centre’s dedication, hard work, and passion have undoubtedly made a positive difference in the lives of many individuals, both within and beyond the Simon Fraser University community.”

The Multifaith Centre is a gathering space at SFU open to community members of all faith backgrounds. It offers events and resources such as faith gatherings, prayer spaces, and information on the university’s religious accommodations - find out more.
