Background and Data Collection

BACKGROUND

I have been playing, coaching and managing soccer for many years on the North Shore. (North and West Vancouver) Over the past few years there has been a huge increase in womens and mens soccer. Previously the kids have had the largest population. This is a great thing that adults are remaining active later in life but it has caused a major field crunch for those conflicting teams wanting a turn.

I have always wondered, in the absence of budget constraints, would we be able to build more fields?

This project will attempt to determine where we can build more fields. I am focusing specifically on grass and turf soccer fields in North and West Vancouver. There are also gravel fields and those that are used for other sports like baseball but for the scope of this project I will be concentrating on soccer use.

I have been in contact with the assistant field coordinator for North Vancouver - Illona Smith and the field coordinator for West Vancouver - Claudia Sparling who helped with letting me know what fields are currently out there in use for soccer.

West Vancouver has 2 artificial turf and 9 full size grass fields. (Along with 3 high school pitches that they can use in a pinch when not being used by the high school programs.)

North Vancouver has 2 artificial turf, 27 full size grass fields for soccer and 7 high school options.

Some of the limiting constraints I looked at are: flat land, proximity to water, the need to be open and undeveloped land, and the general area proposed.

DATA COLLECTION

Most of the data I found was in the data on file at SFU. I also digitized the fields from the data I got from the field coordinators and I got some extra information from GeoGratis.

One problem I found was the scope of the information. I found a 25m DEM of North Vancouver. I did not use it as I couldn't find a coordinating one for West Vancouver. Instead I chose to use a 50m DEM for the entire Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD).

25m DEM for North Vancouver
50m DEM for the GVRD

The landuse data I used was also information for the entire GVRD. I found it much easier to use bigger data sets and pull out the information that I needed rather than joining smaller data sets. The problem with this is the potential for less detail.

This was originally a dataset for the entire GVRD. I selected out the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver and the District of West Vancouver.

Now onto the design...
