Problems Encountered

There were many issues that created problems throughout the analysis process. They included:

  1. Incorrect use of projection in ArcGIS. I was incorrectly shown how to project shapefiles and used "define projection" instead of "feature projection" in ArcCatalog. This resulted in backtracking and reprojecting all of my shapefiles from the original shapefiles.
  2. Ensuring all raster images contained the same projection, resolution, columns/rows and x/y co-ordinates. Much time was spent trying to understand how to change the columns and rows, which was my biggest problem. This was done in IDRISI using the PROJECT module.
  3. Using point data such as airports or Native Reserves on a small scale. Because I was looking at all of B.C., it was difficult to see point information (usually 1 pixel in size) when added to the DEM of BC. To remedy this, I eliminated data, used it as a smaller resolution in order to see the points (see Native Reserves) or digitized points in IDRISI (see Suitable Locations) in order to see them more clearly.
  4. The MCE did not initially work, which resulted in a thorough re-examining of constraint and factor variables.

Besides from these problems encountered during the analysis process, other isses included problems in moving files from the D:// Temp into the H:// drive, crashing servers, random errors requiring manual shut-down of programs and freezing of programs.
