GSWS Feminist Book Club's December Book:

Butter Honey Pig Bread

Francesca Ekwuyasi

Arsenal Pulp Press (2020)

The agreement from the group was that we absolutely loved the book, possibly the best book we’ve read in book club thus far. The author was very descriptive in her writing of her characters and stories, it enabled us to easily visualize the experiences that all the characters go through.  The way the author uses narrative styles allows us to relate to the story and characters even when there’s a difference in culture, tradition and religion. The relationship Taiye had with her family was very reminiscent of relationships that a lot of us either have, or have heard of, with our families. The author expertly captures the longing we all feel for home and family when we are far away from them.

While we believe that Taiye was the protagonist, we felt that we adequately got to know all the other characters and were enamoured by how much we could feel their personalities. We also noted that the title of the book makes the reader excited about diving into the book to discover the correlation between the stories and the chosen title. We are very excited to read more from the author!
