This week, President Joy Johnson shared a message about the launch of SFU: What’s Next?—a series of community conversations to discuss big questions about What’s Next for SFU.

The conversation is already underway—you can take part by sharing thoughts in response to two questions on ThoughtExchange! It's quick and easy to share a thought if you haven’t yet—and if you’ve already shared, don’t forget to check back in, rate new thoughts and see how the conversation is evolving.

SFU PROFESSOR SHARES EXPERIENCE LIVING AND TEACHING IN WAR-TORN UKRAINE

Communication professor Svitlana Matviyenko is caring for her parents and teaching remotely from her home in Kamyanets-Podilsky, Ukraine this term. Throughout the invasion, Matviyenko has been posting updates on Twitter, keeping a personal blog and is working on a book about her experiences.

“Professionally, as a scholar, it is a chance to lend my voice to the narrative and to be a first-hand witness to history,” she says.

 

SFU STUDENT CELEBRATED FOR OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD INITIATIVE

John Thomas, an SFU engineering student and former president of the student-run SFU Aerospace group, was recently recognized with a 2022 Changemaker award from The Globe and Mail. The award recognizes “emerging leaders who are finding pragmatic solutions to the world’s most intricate problems.” Thomas notices that aerospace is a male-and engineering-focused field and he is driven to get more people involved and passionate about it.

 

FLOURISHING THROUGH FAITH

Seth Greenham began volunteering at SFU as a chaplain in 1999 and today he is the director of the Multifaith Centre. After 22 years, the job still hasn’t gotten old.

As he says, “Working with students and supporting them throughout their university journey—that’s what gets me up in the morning.”

 

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls were honoured in an SFU class project through the lens of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action.

Learn more about the project and criminology professor Brenda Morrison's approach to creating meaningful "social echoes."

Mechatronic systems engineering professor Behraad Bahreyni and chemistry professor Gary Leach created an innovative partnership at SFU’s 4D LABS. Their latest invention is a first-of-its-kind vector light sensor that captures both light direction and intensity. It offers improved functionality, performance and safety in numerous applications, from security systems to gaming to consumer electronics.

 

Mayra Donaji Barrera Machuca was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee’s Virtual Reality Best Dissertation Award. The award is presented each year to the author of the most outstanding PhD dissertation in the areas of virtual and augmented reality.

NOMINATE TODAY: AWARDS FOR DISTINGUISHED COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE

Committees are now seeking nominations for the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award (CDSA) and President’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award (DCLA).

  • The CDSA recognizes and celebrates individuals and organizations for their outstanding commitment and service to the university. This year, nominations for youth and emerging leaders are encouraged.
  • The President’s DCLA honours individuals or organizations for their distinguished contribution to public good within their community.

Award recipients are dedicated to SFU’s commitment to reconciliation, education, learning and growth—and creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive society for all. Submissions are due Friday, May 20.

 

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT SFU'S CENTRE FOR DIALOGUE

What is the SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue known for? Add your voice to this survey and share your views of the Centre's goals, objectives and activities. Findings from the survey will be used to inform the Centre's programming and communications for the next few years.

Experience mesmerizing stories and art at the 4th annual Skoden Indigenous Film Festival. The festival is run by SFU students and exclusively features Indigenous filmmakers and creatives from across Turtle Island.

 

RETHINKING COURSE DESIGN

April 28-29 & May 2-3 | Hosted by SFU Centre for Educational Excellence

Are you developing a new course? Would you like to revise one of your current courses? 

This four-day, peer-facilitated workshop is designed to support you in developing your course. By the end of the workshop, you will have a draft course outline and a plan for implementing new teaching strategies that you want to explore. Applications are due by Thursday, March 31.
