SFU PROFESSOR WINS 2022 YWCA WOMEN OF DISTINCTION AWARD

Congratulations to Jen Marchbank, professor in the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, for winning in the category of Education, Training and Development. The award is a testament to her impact as a researcher, educator and activist. Learn how her podcast and interactive educational experiences bring together youth and the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

 

USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO LEARN

OTHER LANGUAGES

Computing science professor Angelica Lim (left) and PhD student Paige Tuttosi (right) are collaborating with French researchers to replicate human voice characteristics in other languages and applying it to robotic teachers. This can improve the robot's ability to teach humans a second language.

 

THREE SFU SCHOLARS AWARDED AS NEW AND RENEWED CANADA RESEARCH CHAIRS

SFU researchers Sharon Luk, Graeme Koelwyn and Stephanie Simmons are making an impact in diverse fields—from how exercise affects cancer patient outcomes, to transforming healthcare and cybersecurity through quantum computing advances.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

The SVSPO has relocated to room 1301 in the West Mall Centre while the Diamond Alumni Centre undergoes renovations. The SVSPO offers virtual and in-person support services for all SFU and FIC community members (students, faculty, and staff) who have been impacted by sexual violence. SFU's Community-Engaged Research Initiative fellowships are available to graduate students to facilitate community-engaged research through community connection, financial support, mentorship, peer learning and professional development. Application deadline is June 30.

Friends of Simon is an award-winning SFU Faculty of Education initiative. In the fourth episode of the Simon's Stories podcast, they discuss the power of creative problem solving and finding ways to meaningfully include children from different cultures. Tune in on SoundCloud or on Friends of Simon website.

SFU's Board of Governors recently approved the appointment of Kristin Linklater to this new position. She will provide strategic oversight and champion university strategic communications and marketing as well as provide guidance to the President's Office for strategic planning and communications. Kristin has held the role of Executive Director, Communications and Marketing at SFU for the past six years. During her tenure, SFU has made significant strides in brand and reputation, media relations and digital communications.

A PRESENTATION WITH BRODIE DOUGLAS, MÉTIS HISTORIAN

June 9| Hosted by SFU Faculty of Health Sciences

This online presentation will look at colonialism from a Métis lens and will show why history matters when considering Métis Health.

On June 13, academics can tune in and find opportunities for professional development, learning and networking for those interested in knowledge mobilization, translation and exchange. SFU VP Research brings together a community dedicated to sharing learnings, best practices, tools and resources.

In addition to the virtual event, there are free, in-person networking events on June 16 for Health xChange, followed by Get Connected.
