EMPOWERING STUDENTS WITH AN INNOVATIVE AND COMPASSIONATE TEACHING STYLE

Tara Holland, a senior lecturer in SFU’s Department of Geography and School of Environmental Science, is a compassionate and reflective educator who enhances student learning in her classrooms using evidence-based techniques. Her dedication to student experience was recognized with a 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award.

 

FOCUSING ON POVERTY AND INEQUALITY

Economics professor Krishna Pendakur has been awarded the Bank of Canada Fellowship for his important work on inter-ethnic inequalities and Indigenous inequality in Canada. Find out how the fellowship could translate into a more equitable handling of inflation towards mitigating poverty.

 

ANALYZING ALGORITHMIC AUTHENTICITY

What makes information feel true or compelling? Are we real or are we algorithms? Canada 150 Research Chair in New Media Wendy Hui Kyong Chun and communications PhD student Anthony Glyn Burton wrote a new book, Algorithmic Authenticity, which brings different disciplinary approaches to understanding what is authentic in the age of information disorder.

BRINGING INDIGENOUS CULTURE TO THE HEART OF SFU'S SURREY CAMPUS

Two new public works of Indigenous art have been installed to acknowledge, honour and respect the unceded traditional territories of the First Nations, where SFU’s Surrey campus is located. More than static installations, the pieces are platforms for learning and inviting audiences to deepen their understanding of the region’s Indigenous peoples’ traditions and their relationship with the land. Our Roots Run Deep, produced by Phyllis Atkins and her son, Noah (Kwantlen First Nation), and Step by Step, by Rain Pierre (Katzie First Nation), are the first two Indigenous art pieces to be installed at the campus.

 

SFU SUMMER CAMPS UPDATE

Do you know any young people looking for fun activities to do this summer? SFU Summer Camp registration is now open. This July and August, SFU Camps offer a variety of educational, outdoor, sports and leadership programs for children ages 4.5 to 17.


SFU Camps also offers student-centered leadership development through employment and volunteer opportunities in a variety of the camp programs.

 

BURNABY CAMPUS: TEMPORARY TRANSIT SERVICE CHANGES

Until May 2024, several bus stops at the transit exchange loop will be relocated to accommodate road work on University High Street. 144 Metrotown Station trips now leave from the new Bay 4 located on University High Street by Starbucks. 143 Burquitlam Station trips now leave from Bay 3. Please pay attention to signage at bus stops. 

The SFU Accessibility Project seeks to learn more about accessibility work currently underway at SFU. The survey will take approximately three minutes to complete and it will inform planning and implementation for a longer-term Accessibility Plan for the university.

$100,000 can be awarded in grants of up to $10,000 each, to support projects that build or deepen partnerships with SFU’s communities through rigorous community engagement. In the past nine years, over $1 million has been allocated in support of more than 200 community-university projects. Application deadline: April 5.

DATA VISIONARIES LUNCH-TIME SERIES: ETHICAL DATA USAGE

Join Fred Popowich, scientific director at SFU's Big Data Hub and Alexandra Greenhill from Careteam Technologies as they discuss ways to apply ethical data approaches to projects.

 

UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL & TRANSGENDER HISTORY

Avery Dame-Griff explores how the internet shaped transgender identity and activism from the 1980s to the present. As he argues, the ways trans people used digital infrastructure in the early days of the internet to build community offers key lessons in a moment of moral panic.
