CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Selected dance improvisational skills will be explored in a variety of solo, duet, small group and large group forms through structured movement themes. Emphasis will be on sensory awareness, elements of movement, and composition. Recommended: dance or theatre experience.

COURSE DETAILS:

In this course, students will be introduced to dance improvisation as a means for expanding their creative and expressive movement potential and for interacting in an improvisational setting with other dancers. Improvisation will also be used for generating material for dance composition. Students will be introduced to the basics of dance composition and assignments will be structured for solo, duo and small groups. Discussions and critical analysis will be an important component of this course and studio work will be supplemented with readings and short written assignments.

  • On going evaluation of studio work and improvisational skills 40%
  • Short composition assignments 40%
  • Written assignments 20%
