Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

This course continues the work begun in CA (or FPA) 230-5 Filmmaking II. Students will acquire proficiency in film technique through lab exercises, readings and film screenings. As well, all students will participate in the completion of short original sync-sound 16 mm. films which were begun in CA (or FPA) 230. Emphasis is placed on the development of means for creative expression supported by technical skills. Laboratory fee required. Students should be advised that film production will probably incur significant costs in addition to lab fees. Students with credit for FPA 231 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course continues the film production work that began in CA 230. The course will focus on the post-production process of filmmaking and the major part of the course will be devoted to further develop the students’ CA 230 projects. The course will attempt to demystify concepts of post-production with the help of lectures, guest seminars and workshops.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

Students will be encouraged to reflect on their artistic and technical processes as they face the challenges of creating their projects. Throughout the semester, they will meet for workshops, in-class exercises, and discussions of their progress. The students will learn to effectively take their film project through the post-production process; from rough cut to a theatrical screening.

NOTES:

The grading of the projects will be based on group engagement, creative process and the project itself. Group members will be graded individually on their role in the production as well the finished result. Class and group participation will also be part of the final grade.

REQUIREMENTS:

Students will need to participate in classes and labs. They will also need to be active members of their film production groups.

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

There will be production associated costs to each group’s film productions in addition to required lab fees. All expenses will be discussed and agreed upon by class members before being approved.

REQUIRED READING:

Selected chapters from A Filmmaker’s Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Digital Age: 2013 Edition, Steven Ascher and Edward Pincus.
