Attendance and participation: 40%

• Bring new material to share with your section every week.
• Attend all seminars and tutorials (3 late arrivals of more than 5 minutes = 1 absence).
• Attend at least 3 events that you will discuss with your tutorial, from a list that wil be provided in class (or propose an alternate for credit approval).
• Engage actively with others' work and process in weekly discussions and presentations.
• Submit scores and parts on time and in good condition.
• Prepare for readings, rehearsals, and the final concert.

Composition: 60%

• Growth over the course of the term.
• Originality/Creativity.
• Dimensionality (attention to multiple facets of a work that could include time, form, concept, colour, orchestration, density, pacing, pitch, rhythm or other aspects unique to the work).
• Attention to detail (creative and practical).
• Scoring (Functionality of score and parts to achieve desired outcomes).

Session 1: Meet instructors, introduce Ensemble in residence
Sessions 2-7: Faculty and guest composer presentations / discussions
Sessions 9-12: 9:30 am Seminar start time - Reading Sessions / Student presentations
Session 13: 9:30am-12:20pm; 2:30pm-5:20pm - Rehearsals for Music & Sound Festival

Ensemble in Residence

In addition to playing for our in-class reading sessions and year-concert, these musicians will have a rehearsal studio on the 4th floor (GCA 4945) where they will host weekly office hours available for you to ask questions, hear passages demonstrated on an instrument, or explore the possibilities of special techniques. Note: You must sign up for these office hours at least 24 hours in advance via an online sign-up sheet.

REQUIREMENTS:

Attendance at the Music & Sound Festival is mandatory. These dates will fall during the exam period and will be announced on the first day of classes. Seminar will begin an hour earlier on certain dates to accommodate Reading Sessions/Presentations.
