    LING 321 or 330, and 9 additional units of upper division Linguistics.



Application of principles from phonetics to a number of practical problems in such areas as second language learning and teaching, forensics, communications, commerce and the arts.


An overview of research and applications in contemporary forensic phonetics. We will read and discuss a selection of original articles from leading journals covering voice analysis and description, earwitness testimony, forensic voice comparison, vocal disguise, content determination, and Bayesian logic. Hands-on analysis assignments will illustrate research techniques. We will also examine research designs used in phonetic investigations, and discuss statistical procedures. NOTE: LING 411 emphasizes concepts in acoustic phonetics and statistics. Examinations, quizzes and assignments will require mathematical computations and extensive writing.

Working knowledge of English phonetic transcription (IPA) is required of all registrants. The instructor strongly recommends that students have LING 330. For those who do, the instructor is willing to waive the additional 9 upper division LING units. Those who have LING 321 but not 330 must have the additional 9 upper division LING units.

It is strongly recommended that you see the Student Advisor regarding your degree requirements at least two semesters before you plan to graduate.  Unless you meet both faculty and major/minor requirements, your graduation cannot be approved.

Please note a grade of “FD” (Failed-Dishonesty) may be assigned as a penalty for academic dishonesty.

  • Although there are no required textbooks, a number of readings (available on-line) will be assigned.
  • All students are required to obtain an iClicker (both older and newer models are acceptable) which is to be brought to every class.
  • All students are required to participate in group work (for credit) and all must have access to a computer (Mac, Windows or Linux) with spreadsheet software for analysis assignments.
