Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to Coast Salish nations, lands, and cultures from historical and contemporary perspectives. Study of similarities and diversities between Coast Salish communities, and their connections to their shared homelands on which SFU is located. Students with credit for FNST 222 under this topic may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DETAILS:

We will explore a diversity of sources, such as oral history, archaeology, cultural heritage, language, and artwork as sources for our learning. We will learn from directly from Coast Salish individuals and academics, and the class will incorporate place-based learning experiences.  

After taking this class, students will be able to:
-          explain major shifts in Coast Salish histories from origins in time immemorial, through to contemporary moments.
-          discuss the relationship between Coast Salish peoples and their shared homelands, and evaluate their own connection to those             homelands as well.  
-          comprehend the connections and divergences between Coast Salish cultures and communities.

NOTES:

The class includes a Halq’eméylem place names tour in the Fraser Valley on February 11, 2020, which will take most of the day (8am-5pm).
